Saddam's daughter Raghad said she and her sisters wanted an international trial to ensure justice.
"He should not be tried by the Governing Council which was put in place by occupiers," she said in Jordan where she lives.
"A lion remains a lion even in captivity," she said. "I am really proud that this man is my father."
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in his first public comments, chose a different animal to compare Saddam to.
"The Iraqi nation has suffered greatly under this bloodthirsty wolf. Now it is apparently free of him," he said. "The Islamic world and all those who know what a savage animal he was feel delighted."
A Vatican official said he felt pity for Saddam who had been treated "like a cow" in U.S. military footage.
