Hamas leader Mashal: Iraqi resistance inspires Palestinians
By The Associated Press

BEIRUT, Lebanon - The Iraqis fighting the U.S.-led forces of occupation are an inspiration to the Palestinians, a leader of the militant Palestinian group Hamas said Sunday.

Speaking in the Lebanese capital to mark the anniversary of Hamas' founding in 1987, Khaled Mashal said that the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March and the early stages of the occupation that began April constituted a "point of weakness and a threat to the (Islamic) nation."

"But now we can deal with it as a point of strength, and a point of weakness for the American-Zionist plan in the region," he said.

Mashal is head of the Hamas political bureau and is based in Damascus, the capital of neighboring Syria. Earlier this year, the Syrian government closed the offices of Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups under U.S. pressure. But it did not expel the Palestinian radicals, who reject all interim peace accords with Israel.

Subsequently, Mashal and other Syrian-based Palestinians have tended to keep a low profile in Syria but have been outspoken on their visits to Lebanon.

Mashal reiterated that Hamas opposed a proposed cease-fire on attacks against Israelis. Earlier this month, Egypt hosted talks between Hamas, other militant groups and the Palestinian Authority in a bid to procure such a cease-fire, believing it would restart the peace process with Israel.

In his speech Mashal said such a truce would save Prime Minister Ariel Sharon from "a worsening predicament."

"Sharon's real program is a self-rule (for the Palestinians) on 42 percent of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, without sovereignty, without Jerusalem and without a return (of Palestinian refugees to their homes in Israel)," Mashal said.
